Lest we forget…

'God of our fathers, known of old,

Lord of our far-flung battle line,

Beneath whose awful hand we hold

Dominion over palm and pine—

Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,

Lest we forget—lest we forget!'

From the poem, ‘Recessional’ by Rudyard Kipling

The photograph is one of the most poignant & moving from our archive. It was taken in 1915 outside the factory in Bermondsey, London. Look closely & you will see that young, able men are mostly absent. They have left for the Western Front. It is the second year of the First World War. It does not take much to imagine that some of them may never have returned. We honour their sacrifice.
