Late 19th Century Chancellor of the Exchequer Despatch Box, Authenticated as Belonging to William Gladstone
The box is finished in black morocco leather over a solid pine construction, stamped in gilt "CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER" beneath the crowned Royal Cypher of Queen Victoria on the lid. The construction is solid and substantial, fitted with a brass carrying handle and the original Davis patent brass lock, complete with lozenge escutcheon and position pins — the most sophisticated and secure locking mechanism available to despatch boxes of the period, reserved exclusively for the highest offices of state.
